National Apprenticeship Week: The Great Apprentice Planter-Of
In honour of National Apprenticeship Week, our Holly Hill apprentice carpenters went head‑to‑head in a high‑stakes, sawdust‑filled showdown.

Located in the apprentice Carpentry workshops at our Holly Hill campus where timber meets talent and learning becomes craft, the rules were simple, build a moveable indoor garden planter for the Learning Hub using only reclaimed materials, group teamwork, and whatever wasn’t screwed down to the workshop floor.

To say the apprentices rose to the challenge would be an understatement, armed with enthusiasm, old boards and fixings, the apprentices set out to create the planters.

Judging was carried out with professionalism & fairness and after much debate the winners Kieran and Sam were crowned, who both work for Collins Contractors.

Their prize? Shiny new tools, of course, because nothing motivates a carpenter quite like the promise of more things to cut and hammer.

The competition wasn’t just about building planters. It was about building knowledge , skills & behaviours through teamwork, problem‑solving and learning from mistakes, every miscut was a lesson, every splinter a step forward, proving that with time and care reclaimed materials can be turned into something brilliant, just like our apprentices.

Huge congratulations to all our apprentices who took part.
